PMU ranchers (under contract with Ayerst) are no longer allowed to sell their horses (foals, etc.) to a rescue organization, such as NYHR. They are also not permitted to sell to feed lots, kill buyers or at a livestock sale where there will be kill buyers. PMU ranchers are now only permitted to sell their horses at sanctioned auction sales.

NYHR will work with several former PMU ranchers that have lost their contracts with Ayerst. These former PMU ranchers are not subject to any ‘selling’ restrictions and are in the process of reducing their herds of unneeded mares, foals, etc. The horses listed below are part of the herd of horses of a former PMU rancher that are in need of being rescued.

THE FOLLOWING HORSES ARE PART OF THE REMAINING STOCK OF A PMU RANCHER WHO IS TRYING TO REDUCE HER HERD. THESE HORSES ARE AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION AND WILL SHIP EITHER WHEN THE LOAD IS FULL, OR IN THE FALL OF 2006. THE RANCHER IS ALSO TRYING TO SELL THESE HORSES AND UNLESS ADOPTED, THERE IS NO GUARANTEE OF THEIR AVAILABILITY. IN OTHER WORDS, IF YOU WANT TO ADOPT PLEASE DO SO ASAP.

If you are interested in a foal/mare that is posted on the site and not already marked adopted, please contact Mona at: mona@nyhr.org or 631.874.9420.

The horses on this page are owned by a rancher who was a PMU rancher. She lost her contract and needs to reduce her herd and place her horses in homes. The horses are adopted from the pictures/bios on the site and are shipped from the ranch in North Dakota to a farm in Catskill, NY. Adopters pick up their horses in Catskill, NY.

PMU ranchers were contracted by a drug company to produce a specific amount of pregnant mare’s urine for hormone replacement therapy drugs. Each rancher kept pregnant mares in straight stalls for approximately six months of every year. Their urine was collected via a large bladder, which was harnessed, to them. In the spring, the mares were turned out in fields to foal. In the early summer, the stallions were turned out in the fields to breed the mares. (Each stud had his own band of mares.) In the fall, the foals were weaned and the mares were tied back into their stalls. Most of the ranchers have lost their contracts with Ayerst and, consequently, their horses are now 'out of work' and are in need of homes.

Adoption fees are posted for each individual horse.

The adoption fee is based on the price of the individual horse (we have to buy the horses from the rancher), the cost of the necessary veterinary work, and the cost of the transportation. The adoption fee includes transportation to Catskill, New York, vaccinations (Eastern/Western Encephalitis and Tetanus) and a coggins. HORSES MUST BE PAID IN FULL AT THE TIME OF ADOPTION. REFUNDS ARE ONLY IF THE HORSE IS INJURED OR CANNOT BE SHIPPED FROM THE RANCH. THERE ARE NO DEPOSITS!

The horses are on a large ranch in North Dakota. If adopted, they will ship to Catskill, New York. Shipping will be as soon as a load is full. The horses will have been vaccinated against Eastern/Western Encephalitis and Tetanus. They will have current coggins and the load will have a health certificate. If not adopted, the plight of the horses is bleak. Most of them will be sent to a livestock auction and the most likely purchaser will be a feedlot buyer. This is a true rescue. The horses are not able to be 'viewed, visited, etc.' prior to adoption. Please take a look at the Success Story page of our site for some updates on adopted PMU horses.

NYHR’s PMU Adoption Program has been very successful. Many of our past PMU adopters are happy with their new horses and have enjoyed the entire adoption experience.

The facility in Catskill is a working horse farm. After arrival in NY adopters will be responsible for shipping their horses to their new homes. As in past years, x will help organize shipping. If you will be doing your own shipping the best trailers for these horses are stock trailers. If you will be using a trailer with a divider, the divider must be removed. All trailers MUST HAVE UPPER BACK DOORS. Hay nets are not recommended. Bringing another horse for company is not recommended UNLESS the other horse is in a separate compartment. Do NOT bring halters!
